High school students are diving into marine science at The Bay Education Center thanks to a grant from the Alcoa Foundation! It's all about hands-on experience and critical thinking, getting these future leaders ready to take care of our waterways!

The EHS Advanced Animal Science students visited Lee Ranch where they were able to observe animal husbandry at its finest: ranchers sorting cow/calf pairs, culling, castrating, branding, vaccinating, and ear tagging.
The students helped open gates, reload ear taggers, and asked the ranchers questions. They were able to have real-world application of class content as well as love on the sweet heifer calves.

November 22nd – High School students in the Student Leadership and Wildlife Management classes took the first of three field trips thanks to a grant provided by the Alcoa Foundation to the University of Houston-Victoria. This first trip was to The Floating Classroom in Rockport.
The grant provides funding for three Marine Science Field Trips during the 2024-2025 school year. UHV graduate/undergraduate students also visited the high school to teach students about the ecosystem and water conservation and to prepare them before they attend the field trip. The graduate/undergraduate students will also accompany students on field trips to point out information and add to the experience. The high school students will learn the functionality of bay systems, how they work, how to take care of them, and how to think critically about scientific data collection and verification. This will help students, the future leaders of the community, understand the importance of being stewards of the Lavaca Bay and surrounding waterways.
